Find out what damages and repairs are covered by your Apple warranty

We’ve all been there. Spilling coffee all over the MacBook keyboard, or accidentally dropping your iPhone in the toilet. Apple users know that once you purchase an Apple product, you receive a one-year hardware warranty and 90 days of free phone-based tech support, starting from the date of purchase. Apple generally picks up the tab for repairing or replacing your hardware (at its discretion).

Does the warranty cover every accident?

The warranty is great news, especially if you have a habit of dropping your devices in water. However, the Apple warranty does not cover damage caused by:

  • Use with non-Apple products
  • Accident, abuse, misuse, flood, fire, earthquake or other external causes
  • Operating the product outside the permitted or intended uses described by Apple
  • Service (including upgrades and expansions) performed by anyone who is not a representative of Apple or an Apple Authorised Service Provider
  • A product or part that has been modified to significantly alter functionality or capability without the written permission of Apple
  • Consumable parts, such as batteries, unless damage has occurred due to a defect in materials or workmanship

Murphy’s Law, your device starts acting up after the year warranty has passed. What happens now? You purchase AppleCare, this is the extended warranty service that Apple offers.

How AppleCare works

You pay an up-front cost to cover any potential problems. But more precisely, AppleCare plans extend the length of your hardware coverage for both repairs and support. There are four separate plans for Macs and Apple displays, iPhones, iPads, iPods, and Apple TVs. We’ll focus on the MacBooks and mobile devices.

For Macs and displays, AppleCare gets you a total of three years’ support—phone support for 33 months and the limited warranty for two years (for a total of three years). For all other products—iPods, iPads, iPhones, and Apple TVs—AppleCare gives you a total of two years support.

You can buy an AppleCare Protection Plan at any time during the one-year warranty period.

What the AppleCare covers

Mac support: For Macs, AppleCare offers parts-and-labour repair coverage from Apple-authorised technicians for the computer, its included accessories (power adapter, for example), and any Apple-supplied RAM. A Mac plan also covers AirPort hardware (purchased up to two years before your Mac purchase or during the term of your AppleCare plan), an Apple USB SuperDrive (for the MacBook Air, MacBook Pro with Retina display, iMac, and Mac mini), and an Apple display purchased at the same time as, and on the same receipt as, your Mac.

iPhone and iPad support: AppleCare+, the special brand of AppleCare for iPhones and iPads (and some iPods), covers the devices (specifically their batteries and defects in materials or workmanship), the included cables and power adapters (and, for the iPhone, headphones), and your AirPort hardware.
